Dr. Atkin was interviewed by Axios for an article about Multiracial identity!
" Annabelle Lin Atkin, an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Science at Purdue University, said multiracial people like Harris challenge decades-old racial hierarchies, and their very presence breaks the rules. "We live within this mono-racial framework where we assume that race is mutually exclusive... you can only check one box on the form. Our society has functioned this way for such a long time that people have a hard time understanding that this is changing.""

It was a happy and sad May 2024 for the lab, as six of our undergraduate research assistants graduated from Purdue. Each one was integral to the exciting work we've been doing in the lab, and we will miss them! We are super excited for the next steps in each of their journeys, and wish them all the best.
Here are some of the amazing things our grads will be doing next!
- Sarah has been hired as a lab manager for Dr. Ashley Jordan at the University of Wisconsin Madison Psychology Department
- Audrey has been hired as a lab manager for the Parent-Child Dynamics Lab under Dr. Erika Lunkenheimer at Penn State in the Psychology Department
- Madeline will be starting medical school at Marian University
- Courtney will be starting a graduate program in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University
- Kayla is working as a recruitment consultant in Chicago

On April 9th, 2024, two of our undergraduates presented at the Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference! Audrey presented her poster, The Role of Parent-Child Quality on the Association between Racial-Ethnic Socialization and Youth Well-being in Korean Transracial Adoptees, and Sarah presented their interview project, "I Felt Like an Alien" - Examining the Identity Development and Community Experiences of Gender Diverse, Multiracial Emerging Adults.

In February 2024, we tabled again at Purdue's Asian and Asian American Resource and Cultural Center's Lunar New Year Celebration! This year, we had a game where two people could race at using chopsticks to transfer pieces of rice and beans between bowls - but no matter who won, everyone got yummy Asian candies! We also shared our resources for Multiracial and Asian American families, including information about children's books for Multiracial kids, and articles about how to navigate being bicultural in America.

At the beginning of the Fall 2023 Semester, one of our lab members, Sarah Ramsey, was awarded a research grant for their senior project, the Identity Development of Gender-Diverse Multiracial Adults Study. Their research is now funded through the OUR (Office of Undergraduate Research) Grant. The OUR grant is highly competitive and is awarded to undergraduate students at Purdue University conducting independent research.

On November 14th, two of our lab members presented at the Purdue Office of Undergraduate Research symposium! Delaney presented her poster, “Associations between White privilege awareness and acceptability of racial microaggressions usage,” and Audrey’s poster was about, “The role of racial composition of peer groups on the cultural socialization of transracial adoptees.” Special shoutout to our graduate student, Nathan Lieng, for mentoring Audrey as she worked on her analyses and putting together her poster. And special thanks to all the lab members who gave feedback and asked great questions when Delaney and Audrey practiced their presentations in lab 😊

At the beginning of the Fall 2023 Semester, Dr. Atkin was invited to talk at the Purdue Student Union Board's collaboration event with the Multiracial and Transracial Adoptee Club. The Purdue Student Union Board has kickstarted a DEI event entitled Diverse TV, encouraging students to come and have an open discussion about diverse representation in modern media. Dr. Atkin hosted a discussion about Multiracial representation and the complicated messages Multiracial kids can hear growing up in a Mixed family while watching an episode of Mixed-ish with the students. Dr. Atkin loved getting the chance to collaborate with the student organizations on campus and having enlightening conversations!
